Some of Our Community Projects:

Love is Love Valentine Party.  OCC-PFLAG holds an Annual Love is Love Valentine Party.  Young and old, straight and gay, it was a festive event.

No Name Calling Week.  Lincoln County Board of Commissioners and the Newport Mayor have yearly proclaimed a week in January as No Name Calling Week in response to PFLAG’s request to join us in this national Bully Prevention effort.  Gay/Straight Alliance Clubs in Lincoln County plan events and activities to engage other students at their schools.

LCSD School Board Meeting.  At the January LSCS School Board meeting, PFLAG Chair Jeanne St. John reported on plans for No Name Calling Week and presented the Board with a check from PFLAG’s Equity Foundation grant to support Bully Prevention training in the schools.

Love is Love Valentine Party in February was a great success.  We brought together old and young, gay and straight musicians, poets, and writers to provide an afternoon of entertainment to celebrate love.  Over 125 attended and enjoyed decadent desserts provided by four Welcoming Churches, made Valentines at a craft table, sat for Sweetheart Photos, and visited with friends as they enjoyed the best entertainment in Lincoln County.  This will be an annual event!

OUT IN THE SILENCE, an award-winning documentaryfilm about the difficulty of growing up gay in rural America was shown during the directors’ tour of rural Oregon in November 2010.  This    showing involved 10+ co-sponsors and150 attendees, and moved many to greater involvement and advocacy.

Marriage Equality Campaign was active in Lincoln County thanks to PFLAG’s collaboration with Basic Rights Oregon and the Rural Organizing Project.  Following a well-attended Marriage Equality Kickoff event, PFLAG members collected signatures for an ad in local newspapers.

Newport & Lincoln City Farmers Market Tables: Our Farmers Market display table has become a major community education tool as we meet and greet friends and strangers each month.  We give balloons to the kids, distribute PFLAG materials, talk with everyone we can about the need for support and encouragement for gays and their families and friends, especially in rural areas. We also sell Rainbow Stickers and rainbow colored spinners for $1 donation.

Oregon Coast Pride Table: OCC PFLAG has staffed a table at all Iris Pride Celebrations and Oregon Coast Pride Celebrations in Lincoln City.  Held each September, the Lincoln City Pride event is the only Pride event on the Oregon Coast and is an important gathering for gays and allies.

Rainbow Stickers: Safe Space Rainbow Stickers are being sold to businesses and  individuals at PFLAG meetings and events. We want to make the rainbow symbol visible in Lincoln County and for the community to be more aware and gay-friendly.

Annual PFLAG Family Picnic has been held in August to bring together PFLAG members and friends, gay and straight, for an old-fashioned family picnic. Games for the kids, horseshoes for adults, and a great potluck picnic is a great summer celebration.
